Tips for Investing in Jewelry

When planning to invest in jewelry, your first consideration should be how much you will appreciate the piece, instead what it can give you when you sell it in the future. People buy jewelry for many reasons, such as marking an important event in their lives to simply, complementing or accentuating an outfit, or to simply make a statement. No matter your own reasons, here are tips that can help you while shopping around:

Material

One of the most important considerations when determining the value of an item is the material or materials used to make it. When you talk about diamonds, for example, those that are over one carat will generally have a value that exceeds that of diamonds below one carat overall weight. Without a doubt, the four Cs are all important — carat, color, clarity, and cut. As to the cut of the gem, go basic, like round and brilliant, instead of new and trendy. Remember as well that when shopping for a diamond, color and clarity can be of superior importance to size or carat. Thus, a smaller diamond may be worth getting if it is also higher in quality than a bigger one.

Workmanship

Though diamonds or other precious stones are typically your first concern when buying jewelry, the metals used in the design are also important. To illustrate, even if platinum trades lower than gold ounce-for-ounce sometimes, platinum jewelry may still be more expensive than gold in retail simply because platinum is usually harder to work with than gold. Regardless of its higher retail value, platinum won’t keep its value on the secondary market. Before you buy jewelry, look for hints of the metal’s composition. In gold, 14 to 18-karat holds value better compared to 10-karat pieces.

On top of the metal’s composition, quality construction by the jeweler is important, especially with an intricately designed piece.

Brand Reputation

Another factor you may consider when buying jewelry is the brand. Usually, more popular costume jewelry or designer brands are more expensive, regardless of whether they are made of precious or metals, or not.

The good news is, there are many jewelry shops you will find these days, both online and offline. If anything, that means you have enough options to choose from, and there is absolutely no excuse for not finding a piece that you really love. This means as well that there is no need to restrict yourself to one specific shop or jeweler. Make comparisons because that’s the only way you can ever truly say that you’ve found the one for you.
